This survey will focus on the efforts of Virginia’s Fire Service to identify specific needs in the areas of apparatus, equipment, facilities, personnel and training and will also analyze the ability of fire departments to adequately perform the duties of the Emergency First Responder.

Volume III visits the progress made in advancing the fire service as a result of the assistance from the Virginia General Assembly.
   
Strategic Plan VDFP Strategic Plan - VDFP Strategic Plan - Virginia Department of Fire Programs (VDFP) has recently launched its 2004 Strategic Plan – Foundations In Reaching Excellence (F.I.R.E.). Needs Assessment Virginia Fire Service Needs Assessment - At the request of the Virginia General Assembly (VGA), VDFP was directed by the Secretary of Public Safety, John W. Marshall, to perform an annual comprehensive needs assessment of Virginia’s fire service. The purpose of this annual study is to provide accurate and up-to-date information to members of the Virginia General Assembly so that they can make informed decisions with regard to fire service funding issues. ReliablePublicSafety Reliable Public Safety Radio Communications for Emergency Personnel - During the 2003 Session of the Virginia General Assembly, VDFP, with assistance from the Department of Emergency Management and the Department of Housing and Community Development, was tasked in House Joint Resolution 588 (HJ 588) with studying the feasibility of adopting requirements within the Commonwealth that will ensure buildings are constructed and equipped to permit effective and reliable public safety radio communications for emergency personnel operating inside them
   
Public Assembly

Public Assembly Fire and Life Safety Study -
In response to a tragic nightclub fire in Rhode Island in 2003, Governor Mark Warner tasked VDFP, in cooperation with the State Fire Marshal’s Office, with conducting an examination of fire and life safety issues in nightclubs and other public assembly occupancies throughout the Commonwealth.  This report provides a detailed accounting of issues relevant to nightclub and public assembly fire and life safety and recommends ways to improve the current state of affairs in the Commonwealth.

 

   
SAFER Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency (SAFER) Matching Grant Fund Report. As requested in the 2005 Virginia Acts of Assembly, Chapter 951, VDFP provided this report on expenditures from the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency (SAFER) Matching Grant Fund. This report provides comprehensive information on the SAFER grant program at the federal and state levels.
