Since 1995, Ed has served as the Virginia State Fire Marshal.  Ed began his tenure with the State Fire Marshal’s Office in 1974, where he spent 19 years in the Southwest Virginia field office as an inspector, engineer and regional manager working with both the state fire prevention codes and the fire protection and prevention aspects of the state building codes.  In 1993, Ed was selected as Associate Director and Assistant State Fire Marshal.

Ed currently serves on the Board of the International Fire Marshals Association and the National Fire Protection Association’s Technical Committee on Air Conditioning and Ventilation (NFPA 90A & 90B) representing the International Fire Marshals Association.

Ed is a member of the National Association of State Fire Marshals and currently chair their code committee, the National Fire Protection Association, the International Fire Marshals Association, the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, the Building Officials and Code Administrators International and the Virginia Fire Prevention Association.

Ed holds a Civil Engineering Degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) and is a Registered Professional Engineer.  He also holds certifications in several other areas in the building and fire protection fields including Certified Fire Official and Professional Code Administrator.

Ed’s tenure on the Virginia Fire Services Board began in 1996 where he serves on the Committee on Fire Prevention and Control.
