Brian M. McGraw, P.E., was appointed as the State Fire Marshal for the Commonwealth of Virginia effective October 10, 2016. He oversees the operations of the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Virginia Fire Marshal Academy. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland and is a licensed Professional Engineer in multiple states, including Virginia. His fire protection career spans nearly 30 years in various public and private sector positions. He has extensive experience in the application and enforcement of building and fire codes; design of various fire protection systems, including automatic sprinkler, fire alarm, and smoke management systems; construction administration, inspections, and system commissioning; and the application of performance based fire protection engineering design.
Brian began his fire service career as a volunteer firefighter in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, in 1984. He took early retirement from the Arlington County Fire Department, where he served as a Firefighter / Paramedic and Deputy Fire Marshal / Bomb Technician, to accept the State Fire Marshal position. He holds Firefighter, Fire Instructor, Fire Officer, Fire Inspector, Fire Investigator, and Basic Law Enforcement certifications through the Virginia Department of Fire Programs, EMT-Paramedic through Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services, and was an FBI certified Hazardous Device Technician. He is a member of the National Association of State Fire Marshals, the National Fire Protection Association, the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, the International Code Council, the International Association of Arson Investigators, the National Association of Fire Investigators, and the Virginia Fire Prevention Association.
