Briant Atkins serves as the Chief Safety Officer for the Virginia Department of Fire Programs, where he oversees the Risk Management Branch. The Risk Management Branch is responsible for safety and health, accreditation, testing, and quality assurance. The Chief Safety Officer also coordinates emergency management and planning functions within VDFP, to include the agency’s participation with staffing The Virginia Emergency Operations Center during declared emergencies within the Commonwealth.
Briant joined VDFP in 2017 after serving as Fire Safety Officer at The University of Mary Washington. Prior to that, Briant retired after spending 31 years with The City of Alexandria, Virginia Fire Department in Fire Operations at the rank of captain. He was a member of the Metropolitan Medical Strike Team as a Hazardous Materials Specialist and had the opportunity to be deployed at numerous national level events. He also served for 28 years a member of The VDEM Regional Hazmat Team, representing the fire department in a number of regional committees. Briant has also spent approximately 40 years in the volunteer fire service in Virginia.
